What to pack on your cycling adventure with BICYCLE TRAIL TANZANIA
Packing for a cycling trip can be quite the task, especially if packing for a cycling holiday where you may need to remember to carry quite a lot of kit with you.
Whether you are planning a day out on your bike or traveling some distance for a multi-day cycling tour, it’s important that you have everything you will need. We at bicycle trail, we’ve put together this handy checklist of what to pack on a cycling trip so you can make sure you have all the essentials and more though we will provide some equipment and all camping gear, it’s highly recommended to have some that you’ll keep with you.
CYCLING SHOES
Shoes may seem like an obvious item to wear when cycling, but specialized footwear is a must when riding a long route. You may be able to change and replace some of the kit on this cycling trip checklist, but your shoes will need to be custom to you in terms of the fit, size, the cleat on the sole and its position to attach to your bike’s pedals.
HELMET
Safety should remain a priority, whether cycling abroad or at home and according to Tanzania cycling regulations, no cyclist can ride without wearing a helmet. On all of our cycling packages we provide bike with helmet but if you will be comfortable to use yours you’re most welcome, so when packing your kit, remember to check your helmet for any signs of damage and if possible.
SPECIALIZED CLOTHING
As well as your essentials of shorts, socks and bicycle gloves when biking you will also need to consider the weather conditions when packing clothing. At a minimum, you may want to pack both a short and long-sleeved jersey and then extra base layers if it is likely to be cold, arm and leg warmers are also a great way to keep warm when riding.
A WATERPROOF JACKET
Like with any outdoor activity, you cannot always guarantee sunshine on your cycling trip or duration of your race. Cyclists should pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket in order to keep dry and warm as well as protection against the wind and rain. Over-shoes may also be a good idea if you’re in for particularly wet weather conditions.
A PAIR OF PADDED SHORTS
As well as your regular cycling shorts, you may consider packing some padded shorts. This is ideal for cyclists who are taking part in long rides or cycling trips and would like to remain comfortable on the saddle throughout.
SUNGLASSES
A pair of sunglasses will also come in handy, especially if cycling in sunny conditions. As well as protecting your eyes from the sun and providing some relief from glare, a pair of sunglasses will also protect you from any grit or insects flying toward your face.
SOME BIN LINERS
If your kit bag or panniers are not water-tight, it may be a good idea to use bin bags to protect your change of clothes dry. They can also be used to keep your worn items separate from your other possessions.
SNACKS PROVISIONS
When traveling long distances, make sure you pack snacks items at the top of your kit bag so that your snacks are easy to reach. This is important for when you are running low on glycogen and need an energy boost.
CASH AND BANK CARD
If you’re embarking on a leisurely cycling trip, you are likely planning to take a few breaks to enjoy the scenery. When visiting rural areas, it is usually a good idea to carry both cash and card so that you can access your money and treat yourself at the local pub or cafe despite there not being an ATM or card machines.
A FIRST AID KIT
In case of an incident, try to carry a basic first aid kit with you while out on your bike. It is also a good idea to brush up on your knowledge of first aid too so that you are prepared to handle a situation involving yourself or other rider, though we also provide it.
SUN CREAM
Cyclists should pack and apply sun cream in all weather conditions, especially if riding in a country with a warm climate as you will be riding out in the sun for a long duration of time.
MOBILE PHONE
Although you may hope for a break from modern life while on your cycling trip it is still important that you take a mobile phone with you when you go out riding. Access to a phone line is crucial in case of an emergency but you may also use your device for GPS and mapping purposes.

Cycling Activity Level with BICYCLE TRAIL TANZANIA
CYCLING LEVELS
When it comes to choosing an adventure, one of the most important things is finding a trip that matches your expectations, achievable and enjoyable.
The below grading guidelines have been carefully constructed based on our cycling experience as well as feedback from our past bike travellers. We consider daily distances, duration of trip, number of hills, technical terrain and support vehicle access.
If you’re still not sure after reading, that’s okay, give our expert friendly team a call, sms on whatsapp or an email and we will get back to you within or -30 minutes.
VEHICLE SUPPORT / BACK-UP CAR
On the majority of our cycling trips, a support vehicle accompanies the riders. This carries tools and spares, refreshments, your luggage and even, on occasion, yourself. If there is a high level of vehicle support you can confidently book a certain grade in the knowledge that there is back-up should you get tired. Equally, this means that friends or couples of different fitness levels can still enjoy the same trip together.
CYCLING GRADING LEVEL
If you want to push yourself, we can provide the challenge, but most of our cycling tours are exactly that – holidays. In response to customer feedback, we’ve introduced a new grading system to help you select the perfect trip.
The activity level dial offers an immediate illustration of just how challenging the trip will be. Ranging from Leisurely to Tough, the grading takes into account the daily cycling distances and terrain, as well as any technical riding skill required. We also consider the number of cycling days, as there can be a cumulative effect from tiredness on a longer trip, and the type of accommodation used, as this can also influence your day-to-day recovery. The activity levels are equivalent to our previous grading system, so if you’re used to B-grade cycling you’ll be perfectly at home on a Level 3 (Moderate) trip.
EASY
Suitable for anyone who enjoys easy and relatively short rides on flat or gently undulating terrain. Ideal if you simply want to explore a region by bike at a relaxed pace.
EASY TO MODERATE
This grade is ideal if you want to enjoy both easy and moderate rides on the same tour. You’ll cycle through flat or gently undulating terrain, with the occasional more energetic ascent.
MODERATE
Medium length rides suitable for cyclists who are used to undulating routes with occasional energetic climbs. Mainly on trails and quiet roads and you should have a reasonable level of fitness.
MODERATE TO CHALLENGING
Combining moderate grade rides with some challenging days in the saddle, this grade is ideal for reasonably fit cyclists who want to challenge themselves.
CHALLENGING
Longer and more demanding for cyclists who enjoy hilly terrain with some challenging ascents. The routes require a good level of fitness including some non-technical, off-road riding.
